Telefonica calls for UK startups

TECHCITYINSIDER100: Communications giant Telefonica, operating in the UK as 02, has moved into London’s business accelerator market, with the opening of the latest of its internationally successful Wayra Academies, in the capital. The academy, just off Tottenham Court Road, provides lucky startups – the winners of a national competition – the infrastructure and the expertise they’ll need to develop, plus €50,000 to help them on their way. Sound good? It is, says Wayra’s European director Simon Devonshire. But it’s not all about altruism – he says the link makes sound business sense for Telefonica too. Interview by Julian Blake
